The British Geological Survey has led the way in a brand new project, OneGeology,  which pools existing data about what lies under our feet and has made it available on the web.

In the long term it is hoped that this will enable investors to realise the opportunities available in developing countries by making maps available that were previously unavailable to outside investors.

The BSG have also been quick to point out that the system was not developed purely for the commercial ability but that it would also enable scientists and engineers to learn more about the Earth and its environmental changes.
